Protection of antique treasures &

High quality old wooden bows are in shortage. The bows are exposed to
wear and tear, become softer and gets weaker because of their owners'
and many violin builders lack of knowledge of how to treat them. E.g.
violin cleaning polish containing oil will over time, when used for its
purpose on a wooden stick, lowering the velocity of sound in the bow stick.
The stick will never return to its original values. This is because its
elasticity and resistance have been irrevocably modified. Even the quality
factor is greatly reduced since the wood has lost its velocity and has
become heavier.

The few high quality wooden bows that still exist
and are in a good condition have, as a natural prediction of the
basic economic assumptions of supply and demand, reached extremely
high prices. The development in carbon fibre technology will in
the future decrease the demand for wooden bows.
In order to find the perfect pieces of wood for
the making of wooden bows, tons and tons of wood must be cut in
the precious Brazilian forests. Protecting the Brazilian forests
is our collective responsibility. Although violin bows bear only
a small part of the blame, the situation in general is so serious
that Brazil has made a ban on the export of Pernambuco wood for
bows.

In the same way that many old,
master built stringed instruments are sold to private collectors
and museums where they are protected against wear and tear, we all
have a responsibility towards the few master bows that are left
in the world, thereby preserving these for the pleasure and inspiration
of future generations.
To me, it is an enjoyment to be able to decode the old masters'
empirical knowledge, practical skills and sense all the good thoughts
that they have put in their bows. The joy of playing these bows
when they are at their best is simply indescribable. Likewise is
the frustration when a precious bow does not live up to one's expectations. |
With a Leopold carbon fibre bow of a master quality,
you have a partner that does not change its camber or is sensitive
towards temperature and humidity. Neither does it loose strength
or sound quality over time as a result of material exhaustion
or lack of care.Considering that a marriage between player, instrument
and bow is to take place, the variables seem never-ending. My
experience with Leopold's masterbuilt carbon fibre bows is that
the marriage will be lifelong. How many can say that about their
wooden bows where the eternal search is only limited by finances?
Leopold has since 1980 built up a unique knowledge in the field
of carbon fibre bows. The experience of playing with a Leopold
bow is equivalent to that of love at first sight. It does not
require weeks of practicing to adopt a new playing technique.
With Leopold bows, you get the one you love, and not the other
way round.
